The RAIN project

Rising to the challenges facing the nuclear industry: developing robots to go where humans can’t

RAIN (Robots and Artificial Intelligence in Nuclear) is a project that represent a radical departure from existing nuclear research programmes and initiatives.

The nuclear industry has some of the most extreme environments in the world, with radiation levels and extremely harsh conditions restraining human access to many facilities.

Yet to date, robotic systems have had very little impact on the industry, even though it is clear that they offer major opportunities for improving productivity and significantly reducing risks to human health.

The RAIN initiative has been created to address these issues by developing advanced the robotics and artificial intelligence that will be essential for future nuclear operations. Their adoption will hve the potential to completely transform the nuclear industry globally.

The challenge

Develop a website that gets across a range of complex messages clearly and simply to a number of different audiences – the media, politicians, scientists, the general public. At the same time, because the project involves collaboration between several institutions throughout the country, the site was to act as a vehicle by which members of the RAIN community can keep in touch with each other.

HTP response

Whilst much of the information to go on the site was highly technical, we structured content to feature broad messages first – why the research programmes have been created and how they will benefit society and the economy – followed by technical overview and then technical details.

To support this structure we created a strong, inviting visual identity that makes good use of big, striking images and videos throughout to encourage general visitors to explore the site.

Results

A website that works on many levels and communicates strong messages about a project that is of national importance.
